Recent Evidence on Cervical Cancer Screening in Low-Resource Settings

The current fact sheet presents evidence from selected reports of screening and treatment that have been published since the paper cited above was written, in both lowand high-resource regions. This recent information continues to support the use of HPV DNA technologies and—until low-cost versions are available for use in developing countries—the use of visual inspection methods for cervical cancer screening. Cryotherapy continues to perform well for treating precancerous lesions in low-resource settings, although the cure rate is not as high as that found in clinical trials in developed countries.
